A few months ago, a few members of our technical team were involved with assisting our customer Design {it} Mill with the large scale Lansdowne Stadium project. The challenge was to quickly resolve design and engineering challenges associated with the fabrication and construction of custom, complex, and curvilinear architectural forms. What was projected by Mark Cichy and the Design {it} Mill team to be a 12-week project was done in 2 weeks using an integrated solution consisting of SOLIDWORKS Premium (design and analysis), SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM (data management), and a custom macro written by one of our applications engineers. The stadium was designed using SOLIDWORKS and computational design techniques pioneered by Cichy and the Design {it} Mill team.  The organic forms generated by this process created 1,850 unique pieces of laminated wood, each with a different multi-axis cut.  Modelling each cut manually would be prohibitively inefficient.  As is often the case with a computational design process, a project specific design environment was required.  Rather than modelling each cut separately, our applications engineer developed a macro that automated the process. The results of having our technical team on this project resulted in:
  • Reduced development cycles by 35 to 40 percent
  • Shortened model build times by 35 percent
  • Accelerated response time to mill by 200 percent
  • Cut 10 weeks from the stadium project
